Since graduating from Sheridan College in 1993, Todd has been perfecting his craft and adding to the community for the past 27 years in both Toronto and Edmonton. The name Urban Carrot Hot Glass came from stamp he used to use to make sure no one stole his tools.
Their signature piece is a scotch glass that has a map of Edmonton on the side and an impression of the North Saskatchewan River on the bottom. Todd is truly a master craftsman and makes glass blowing look easy. After making two scotch glasses during our visit, he made a tumbler drinking glass with red, white, and green stripes demonstrating how colour can be added to glass.
Urban Carrot’s studio is a small, one-car garage on the south side of Edmonton where Todd and his wife create their amazing, functional glass art. The interior of their studio is lined with wood from a local farm and signed by anyone who comes for a visit. The walls are crowded with so many signatures, it is hard to find a place to sign. Although small, the studio speaks to Todd’s way of making and brings together function and comfort, and makes you feel welcome.
Urban Carrot does not use social media but have been successful in partnering with local shops like the Alberta Craft Council. If you would like to see their products, visit the Alberta Craft Council shop in Edmonton.
